A little reflection today on our journey as Ranchito Milkyway. The pictures above are from when we were first getting started at our home plot here on San Miguel Rd.

I saw a video of a man asking a guy off the street, if he gave him $10,000,000, would he take it? And of course the guy says yes. And now he adds the catch- he won’t wake up tomorrow. And then, of course, the guy says no I won’t take it. “So that means waking up tomorrow is worth more than $10,000,000?”

I am a total sucker for cheesy stuff like that. And although it definitely made me think of the future, it also got me thinking about days, and their accumulation. If we add up 4 years and 9 months worth of work, that is roughly 1600 days each. 1600 days of waking up and working with a vision of what matters to us, even when all we can do is put one foot in front of the other, fix one irrigation leak after the next; each day is just as important and innocuous as the following and the previous.

We can’t think of those days without thinking of the customers that have supported us. There was many a weeks where we sold 12 CSA boxes as our entire sales. Those 12 boxes meant so much to us it makes me tear up. Those folks saw what we were trying to do and showed up with a shared vision. If you’re just finding us now, I am hopeful that in the grand scheme of things you’re finding us towards the beginning of our journey. That your vision is meeting ours and we can together build a place and community that connects us to the earth that feeds us, that makes “healthy” feel abundant and nourishing rather than fearful and strict, and that each of us can turn down that $10,000,000 and wake up with a smile, knowing each day, at the very least, we can eat some good food.
